HiFi House completes Room of Magic theater at CHOP
January 10, 2008 -
Philadelphia, Pa. - Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has discovered a new treatment that seems to magically boost the spirits of sick children, regardless of their illness. It’s their new “Room of Magic,” a state-of-the-art private digital theater featuring 134 audio-visual components donated by HiFi House. The project, valued at $150,000, was made possible through a partnership between HiFi House and the Elf Foundation, a non-profit charity that brings the uplifting magic of music and film to hospitalized children in their time of need. This is the third Room of Magic to open in Philadelphia, and 69th to open in North America.
“The Room of Magic is a delightful place where hospitalized kids can be kids again, and leave the fears and worries of the day behind,” says Jon Robbins of HiFi House. “It’s an escape into a magical world where they can join their friends, family, and other patients, and forget about treatments and therapies for a few hours. When you see their faces light up as they step into the Room, you know that magic truly exists.”
The multi-purpose, 50-foot-by-25-foot space features an elite digital theater and audio system designed and installed by HiFi House’s Audio Video Systems Group (AVSG). The space can be divided into three private spaces by sliding movable partitions. Each section includes a complete digital theater and surround sound system, allowing children to enjoy three shows at once without disturbing children in adjacent sections.
The Room of Magic includes three high-resolution Sony five-disc DVD/VCR players, three 60-inch-by-80-inch Draper electric ceiling screens, three ceiling-mounted Sanyo HD projectors, 18 JBL recessed-ceiling surround-sound speakers, six in-wall subwoofers, and accompanying A/V accessories that, together, create an unparalleled music and film experience. The Room is also outfitted with an assistive listening system for HOH/LD children. Tables and chairs can be used for seating, or moved to the side to let children gather on the floor or accommodate those in wheelchairs.
When it’s not being used as a cinematic getaway for patients, the Room of Magic can function as conference rooms for presentations and training sessions. CHOP employees can use the three Vaddio video conferencing cameras, 12 Clock Audio ceiling microphones for audio conferencing, and two PC video connections to connect to remote organizations. All equipment in the space is controlled by an AMX wireless color touch-panel.
HiFi House and AVSG also outfitted the cafeteria down the hallway from the Room of Magic with 152 pieces of audio and visual equipment. Designed to function as a meeting and media room, it features four wall-mounted 50-inch flat-screen LG plasma displays; eight JBL wall-mounted speakers; and accompanying microphones, amplifiers, transmitters, receivers, and equalizers for realistic audio and visual quality.
“We couldn’t have realized this dream without the generosity of HiFi house,” says Doug Weinstein, president of the Elf Foundation. “Together we’re bringing smiles and laughter to the children who need it most. That’s the real magic behind what we do.”
